Politiske kommentarer, satire og karikaturer. Portretter, reportasje- og rettstegninger. Avistegninger kommer i mange former, og har vært en sentral del av pressehistorien og ytringskulturen siden 1800-tallet.

I avistegningene kombineres journalistikk og kunst: de opplyser, underholder og påvirker, og speiler samfunnets konflikter, verdier og strømninger.

Som en viktig del av norsk kultur- og pressehistorie, er avistegningene også en sentral del av Nasjonalbibliotekets samling. I år belyser Nasjonalbiblioteket avistegningenes historie og satiretegningens utfordringer, fra 1800-tallet og frem til vår tid.

Med utstillingen Med pennen på strupen, lynkurs i avis- og karikaturtegning, foredrag om pressefrihet og dyr i karikaturtegninger, podkastepisoder og annen formidling vises mangfoldet i uttrykk og perspektiver, sentrale tegnere og avistegningenes posisjon i kulturhistorien.

With a pen to my throat

From political commentary, satire and caricatures to portraits, reports and courtroom drawings, newspaper cartoons come in many forms, and they have been a central part of press history and the culture of expression since the nineteenth century.

Newspaper cartoons combine journalism and art: they inform, entertain and influence, reflecting society’s conflicts, values and trends.

As an important part of Norwegian cultural and press history, newspaper cartoons also hold a key place in the National Library’s collection. This year, the National Library is highlighting the history of newspaper cartoons and the challenges represented by satirical drawings, from the nineteenth century to the present day.

With the exhibition With a Pen to my Throat, workshops on cartoon drawing, lectures on freedom of the press and the use of animals in political drawings, podcast episodes and other activities, the National Library will exhibit the diversity of expressions and perspectives, key cartoonists and the position held by newspaper cartoons in cultural history.
