This symposium will focus on Chinese oral storytelling and censorship related to the textual culture of storytelling, exemplified through the Ming-dynasty novel, Jin Ping Mei.

The storytelling tradition and Jin Ping Mei shares a plot that can be traced back to the 14th century story «Wu Song fights the tiger».  Jin Ping Mei is considered one of the absolute masterpieces of Chinese literary tradition and has recently been translated to Danish by Vibeke Børdahl, the first translation into a Scandinavian language. In the first part of the symposium two professional storytellers will perform parts of the «Wu Song fights the tiger» story, both in English and in Chinese.

The second part will see international researchers discuss various aspects of the Wu Song story and the novel Jin Ping Mei, including translation and censorship.
