From Act V

DR. STOCKMANN.
This is what I have discovered, you see: the strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone.

Transl. by Eleanor Marx Aveling.

Doctor Stockmann has discovered pollution in the town’s spa, and requests that the spa be closed down until further notice. His findings are not contested, but his request to close is voted down when the town authorities realize the economic and political consequences this would have for the town. The whole town turns on Stockmann and he is chased away from a town meeting where he has made a speech. His patients desert him, his daughter Petra loses her job and the family is evicted. After considering moving abroad with his family, in the end doctor Stockmann chooses to stay at home and fight for the cause of truth.
