No one has shaped modern drama more than Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906). Year after year, his plays are still staged all over the world. Ibsen remains one of the world\u2019s most staged playwrights, second only to William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ibsen\u2019s plays are so timeless because they say something fundamental about what it means to be human. They explore issues that still matter to us, such as individual freedom, human responsibility, power and morality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 2028 will mark 200 years since Henrik Ibsen was born. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bicentenary celebration will be known as Ibsen 2028 and will highlight the diversity of entry points to and perspectives on Ibsen\u2019s work, as well as unlock his authorship and make it even more widely accessible than it already is, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are we celebrating Ibsen 2028?<\/strong>
In 2028, we will celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen\u2019s artistry has shaped Norwegian culture and made its mark all over the world, and his drama addresses issues and themes that remain relevant to people today. This 200-year celebration will be an opportunity to highlight both the historical legacy and the timeless relevance of his work in Norway and beyond, through a great diversity of events.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will happen?<\/strong>
Throughout the year we will be arranging exhibitions, performances, events, school programmes, research projects and digital events all over Norway and internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is leading Ibsen 2028?<\/strong>
The National Library of Norway is responsible for leading the work on the Ibsen 2028 celebration, providing expertise, coordination and information. Activities and local initiatives are being planned by a national network of Ibsen institutions, along with a large number of cultural institutions, libraries, theatres, research communities and partnerships in Norway and internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
