Objective of the Commemoration

Knut Hamsun occupies a significant role in the history of Norwegian culture, and there is considerable national and international interest in him both as an author and as an influential figure in society. Cultivating this interest and ensuring effective management of Hamsun’s heritage both now and in the future is a matter of national import.
In accordance with its nationwide responsibility for the anniversary celebrations, Hamsun 2009 will strive to ensure that the literary heritage of Knut Hamsun is afforded a high profile, used actively and is effectively managed. This includes:
- disseminating information about and interest in Hamsun’s life and works.
- making Hamsun’s writings available to the broad public. It is of particular importance that Hamsun remains accessible to future generations.
- highlighting Hamsun as a source of inspiration for other authors and artists.
