Portrait of Ulrik Vilhelm Koren. Koren studied at the university in Christiania from 1844 to 1852. He emigrated to America in 1853 to serve the Norwegian congregations in the vicinity of Decorah, in northeastern Iowa. Koren was president of the Norwegian Synod from 1894 to 1910. He was married to Elisabeth Koren, who typified the contribution made to American life the the wives of the frontier Norwegian-American clergymen. Elisabeth Koren's diary gives a vivid description of the crude conditions she and her husband shared with the settlers. From "Symra", No. 1, 1905.
