Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) has been called the spiritual father of the New Deal. He was probably the most original thinker among Norwegians in America. Whereas his brother Andrew Veblen became a leader in the bygdelag movement, Thorstein Veblen kept aloof from the Norwegian-American community. The photograph was taken ca. 1907.
