Portrait of Norwegian-American author and educator Ole E. Rølvaag (1876-1931). Born on the island Dønna in Helgeland, Norway. Rølvaag traveled to an uncle in South Dakota when he was 20. He was called to teach Norwegian at St. Olaf College where he remained until his untimely death in 1931. He wrote several novels in Norwegian, the most important of them being "I de dage "in 1924 and "Riket grundlægges "in 1925. The two were combined in the English translation that appeared in 1927, "Giants in the Earth".
