Ulvestad was born in Volde, Sunnmøre, in 1865. He emigrated to America in 1886. Ulvestad was a collector of data, a dedicated antiquarian, whose several thick volumes list large numbers of names, in 1901 by settlement, in 1907 thematically, and in 1913 alphabetically. He was presented with the Knight's Cross, First Class, of the Royal Order of St. Olav, for his dedicated work in collecting material for "Nordmændene i Amerika, deres historie og rekord". The ceremony took place in Seattle in Washington, and Ulvestad received the appointment from Consul Th. H. Kolderup.
