How to use the search form

General information

The database provides "free text" search, which means any search for words within selected fields of the records. The words do not need to be consecutive. Searching is not case sensitive; characters may be entered in upper or lower case. Please avoid frequently used words in order to obtain relevant search results.

Boolean operators:

Search expressions may be combined using the boolean operators AND, OR or NOT (if necessary with parentheses to avoid ambiguities). If you wish to search for phrases containing the words AND, OR or NOT, these words (or the whole phrase) must be quoted.

Truncations:

When uncertain of spelling, you may block one or more characters using the truncation symbols “?” og “#”. Only right truncation in possible.

Number of hits:

For the time being there is a limit of 10 000 hits. If such a search result should occur, please narrow the search further.

Specific search fields

Word search

Search for words pertaining to name of person, name of orchestra or group, title, series title, publisher, etc. Please avoid frequently used words.

Words from title/note area

Search for words from any title or from words in note areas. Series titles have to be searched for in the field Words from series title .

Please avoid frequently used words.

Person:

Any person associated with a work may be searched for, e.g. composer, performer, author, etc. Please be aware of that the name of the person must be inverted.

Examples:
Grieg, Edvard ( surname, first name)
Carola ( performer’s name consists only of first name)

Orchestra/Group/Institution:

Enter one or more words pertaining to name of orchestra, group or institution.

Examples:

gravrok band (name in full form: Henning Gravrok Band)
kongens gardes storband ( name in full form: H.M. Kongens gardes storband)

Names with a hyphen may be written in one word, in two words, or in two words with a hyphen.

Example:

Oslofilharmonien or oslo filharmonien or oslo-filharmonien (name in full form: Oslo-filharmonien)

Publisher/Label

Enter one ore more words from the name of the publishing company, label, trade mark or brand name.

Example:

busk (name in full form: Busk Records)

Words from series title

Search for one or more words from the series title. Please avoid frequently used words.

Geographic names

Local music or folk music from a specific place may be retrieved in this field by entering the geographic name in Norwegian.

Catalogue/matrix number:

The catalogue number or the matrix numer may be filled in with or whithout the record label.

Example:

Heilo: HCD 7164 or HCD 7164

ISRC/ISBN:

ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) and ISBN (International Standard Book Number) may be written with or without a hyphen.

Examples:

NO-GHH-00-64120 or NOGHH0064120

82-91090-66-1 or 8291090661

Country of origin

Choose one or more countries from the pull-down menue if preferable in combination with other search fields.

Keep (ctrl) button down to mark countries which do not succeed each other in the list.

Keep (shift) button down to mark countries that succeed each other in the list.

No indication of country means all countries.

Narrow search by year of publication

The search may be narrowed to a particular year or years of publication.
The same year in both fields narrows the search to that particular year.
Blank first field means no lower limit. Blank second field means no upper limit.
Leave both fields blank for no date restriction at all.

Because of the way of indexing the database, narrowing to the last two years means narrowing to the year(s) of registration, not to the year(s) of publication.
