Morgenstierne´s greatest single contribution to
linguistics must be his theory about the origin of the Nuristani (Kafir)
languages. He claimed that these languages separated from the
Indo-Iranian family already before the Rig Veda (a
collection of Vedic hymns) was formulated or perhaps even before the Indian and
Iranian branches began to separate. His theory took years to gain support among
