This website is part of the centenary marking of the
dissolution of the union and an important part of the information published by
the network of Norwegian-Swedish historians: Project 1905: Norwegian-Swedish
relations over 200 years. Project 1905 is funded by and collaborates with the
company set up to mark Norway's centennial anniversary
Hundreårsmarkeringen Norge 2005 as and the jubilee fund of the National
Bank of Sweden Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The 1905 website was the brainchild
of Project 1905 and has been set up through close collaboration with the
National Library of Norway, the National Archives of Sweden and Norway, the
Royal Library in Stockholm and many others. Project 1905 is working on an
extensive, diverse historical marking of the centenary jubilee of the
dissolution of the union, including book projects and a range of events and
exhibitions in addition to the internet productions.
Content
English version
The 1905 website is primarily in Norwegian and Swedish.
The English summary is intended to give foreign readers a brief introduction to
the events that took place in 1905. There are two general articles in English
about the union between Sweden and Norway and the dissolution thereof, plus
short summaries of texts that deal with some of the main issues related to
1905. There is a timeline showing the main events in the union and especially
1905.
Below is a summary of the information on the 1905 website
available in Swedish and Norwegian, for English-language readers that have a
good knowledge of Scandinavian languages:
The web pages
The website consists of a searchable bibliography and a
variety of sources, articles and pictures. The timeline is a good place to
start. The timeline briefly presents the ninety-year history of the union from
1814 to 1904, focusing on events that were significant to the union in this
period. Most of the timeline deals with the year 1905 and the events that took
place that year. The timeline has links to the thematic texts that deal with
various topics associated with the events of 1905. It is also possible to go
straight to the thematic articles, as opposed to following the chronology of
the timeline. The thematic texts have links to the comprehensive document
database, allowing access to a huge amount of source material available on the
website. All the source material that has been published is accompanied by
explanatory texts.
Source material
The website contains an enormous amount of original source
material from 1905. Most of the material focuses on the year 1905 and broader
political and military events. The source material on the website is accessible
via the document database, where you can search for keywords, titles and type
of source.
Bibliography
Together with the source material, the comprehensive,
searchable bibliography, which as of January 2004 includes approx. 5500
entries, makes up the 1905 website's most important resource for students,
researchers and other people who want to do their own work on these topics. The
bibliography includes some material in English, but by far most of the
publications are in Norwegian and Swedish.
School pages
A special educational pack has been developed for schools
in Norway: the 1905 website's School Pages. The 1905 website's School Pages are
aimed at Norwegian lower and upper secondary schools.
Funding
Project 1905 is supported by Norge 2005 as and the Jubilee
Fund of the National Bank of Sweden. The 1905 website is financed by funds from
the parties involved. Funding has also been received from the Freedom of
Expression Foundation and the Labour Movement Archives and Library in Norway.
The School Pages have been developed with funds from the Norwegian Board of
Education and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. The English
translations were financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
